Overview:
One of the planned objectives for the invasion was the control of three key locations behind the Utah Beach sector. These objectives were assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and included the capture of the major transportation hub at Sainte-Mère-Église and two crossings over the first river obstacle, the Merderet. One of those crossings was the bridge at Chef-du-Pont. The Americans initially attempted to take the bridge, but a poor drop caused significant confusion and delay. It wasn’t until Brigadier General James M. Gavin, the Assistant Division Commander, personally took charge of several squads during the late morning of 6 June that any
American seriously threatened the crossing.
