Overview:

With Lt. Col. Faith now in command and having brought his battalion across the south side of the inlet, he was confronted with a perimeter which showed all signs of having been heavily assailed over several days of battle, destroyed vehicles, enemy dead, and a large number of friendly wounded and the signs of weakened leadership, both the most senior officers, Lt. Cols. Reilly and Embree, were both wounded. One of his first tasks Faith sought to achieve was to gain the perimeter more space, as the enemy had hemmed it into a bow-shaped line of just 1,400 yards by 800 yards at most. While he assigned new positions in the line to the newly arrived companies, he ordered the elements of A and B Companies to make an effort to gain some of the high ground to the south of the perimeter. Only four guns remained in working order to help prep the way for the attack.
