Overview:
With Kampfgruppe Frank mired in a minefield and bogged down in hand-to-hand fighting, Oberstleutnant Heinz-Werner Frank became concerned that the bridge over the Gniloi Tikich was wired for demolition. However, the objective still stood. He was well aware that it would take too much time to build a new bridge if they were to save the entrapped forces in the Korsun Pocket. While a bridge had been captured the day before at the hamlet of Frankovka, it did not appear heavy enough to carry their Tigers across.
