Overview:

The Canadian 4th Armoured Division had to seize the towns of Esschen and Wouwsche Plantage as part of the Commonwealth effort to seal off the German forces manning Walcheran Island and the Beveland Isthmus. Confronting them was the 85th Division of the German Fifteenth Army. The morning of the 23rd saw a small kampfgruppe from this division set off to counterattack Esschen while the Governor General's Foot Guards headed out to attack Wouwse Plantage. The two forces clashed head-on 2.5 km west of Esschen.
