Overview:

In Burma, the untried British 14th Infantry Division had been advancing slowly along the Arakan coast, to clear the Mayu Peninsula and retake the Akyab airfields. Such limited objectives were thought suitable for a reinforced division opposed by one under-strength Japanese regiment. In reality, the divisional HQ was unable to control a force which had grown to nine brigades by early March. Each time the division's tasks were expanded or the Japanese held out longer than expected, another brigade was thrown in. One of these was the 6th Brigade, including the 2nd Durham Light Infantry, a pre-war regular battalion composed of a majority of young draftees with a cadre of professional British soldiers.
