Overview:

Lt. Colonel Thomas Shanley and his troops were still ensconced on Hill 30 defending it and the crossing at Chef-du-Pont. He was three days into the defense and still isolated from the rest of the American forces. However, some supplies had started to get through the swamp, especially much-needed plasma for the wounded. Major General Matthew B. Ridgeway had managed the crisis at both La Fière and Sainte-Mère-Église and now had the resources and time to solve the issue at Chef-du-Pont and bring his isolated troops back into the fold. Thus, he sent Colonel Roy Lindquist and the rest of the 508th on a flanking maneuver from La Fière towards Shanley's position on Hill 30 to consolidate the lines.
