Overview:

One partial success in penetrating the Axis main line of resistance was achieved by the Soviets on 30 January when an assault group swiftly stormed across the Vermezo from the intersection of Bors utca and Krisztina Korut and seized the primary school at the end of IV.-Bela-Kiraly ut. Located at the base of Castle Hill, the school and an adjacent building were being used as the Headquarters of the Budapest Watch Battalion commanded by Lt. Col. Lászlo Veresváry, serving as the final Hungarian reserve force chartered with defending Castle Hill to the bitter end. The next day, Lt. Col. Veresváry vowed to clear the hill area of Soviets.
Attacker: Russian (297th Rifle Division and 3rd Tank Brigade, 23rd Tank Corps)
